Which Type of Acne Scar Do You Have?

Different scar types require fundamentally different treatments. Identifying yours is the first step to an effective revision plan.

Flat Marks

PIH — Brown Marks

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: dark brown spots left after a pimple heals. More common in darker and Asian skin tones. Responds exceptionally well to PICOSURE® PRO laser.

Flat Marks

PIE — Red Marks

Post-inflammatory erythema: persistent red or pink spots caused by damaged capillaries. Common in fair skin. PICOSURE® PRO and LED therapy target vascular pigmentation effectively.

Textural

Indented Scars

Ice-pick, boxcar, and rolling scars are structural — caused by collagen loss during healing. These require collagen induction through skin needling and PICOSURE® PRO to physically rebuild the skin.

Textural

Uneven Texture

General skin roughness, enlarged pores, and irregular surface caused by repeated inflammation. A combination protocol addressing both collagen and pigment delivers the most comprehensive result.

Scar Type & Method

Led by the MARA.H clinical team.
15+ years focused on problematic skin.

Acne scar revision is one of the most technically demanding areas in aesthetic medicine — because the wrong treatment on the wrong scar type can worsen the result. Marina Hu’s 15+ years of specialization in complex skin conditions means your protocol is designed around your specific scar profile, skin tone, and healing capacity.

All advanced laser protocols are performed by the MARA.H clinical team following Cynosure factory-certified training standards on the authentic PICOSURE® PRO platform.

The MARA.H Approach

A Dual-Technology
Revision Protocol.

No single technology addresses every scar type. Our dual-modality approach combines the two most clinically validated scar revision methods available in Sydney.

Modality 01

PICOSURE® PRO — Erase the Marks

Picosecond laser energy shatters melanin deposits in PIH and breaks down vascular pigmentation in PIE, without the thermal damage that worsens dark marks in ethnic skin. Simultaneously stimulates collagen to begin rebuilding skin structure. Read more about our PICOSURE® PRO device.

Modality 02

Skin Needling (MTS) — Rebuild the Structure

Controlled micro-injuries trigger the skin’s natural wound-healing cascade, producing new collagen and elastin. Over successive sessions, indented scars gradually fill and the skin surface becomes measurably smoother and more uniform. See our clinical skin needling page.

Foundation

DMK Enzyme Therapy — Stabilize the Skin

For clients with ongoing breakouts alongside scarring, we begin with DMK Enzyme Therapy to regulate oil production and rebuild the compromised barrier before commencing laser or needling. Treating active acne and scar revision simultaneously is clinically counterproductive.

“Scar revision is not a quick fix — it is a reconstruction. We are asking the skin to rebuild what years of inflammation destroyed. But with the right protocol and patience, the transformation is real.”

Acne Scar Treatment FAQ

MARA.H in Chatswood offers Sydney’s most comprehensive acne scar revision program, combining PICOSURE® PRO picosecond laser and clinical skin needling, performed by the MARA.H clinical team following Cynosure factory-certified training standards. Our multi-modality approach treats all scar types across all skin tones including darker and Asian skin.
Acne treatment targets active breakouts — controlling bacteria, regulating oil, and reducing inflammation. Acne scar treatment addresses the permanent damage left behind after acne clears: red and brown post-inflammatory marks (PIH and PIE), and structural textural scarring. The treatments required for scars are more advanced and typically involve laser technology and collagen induction therapy. See our clinical acne treatment page for active breakouts.
Yes — and this is one of PICOSURE® PRO’s most significant clinical advantages. Traditional lasers carry high risks of worsening PIH in darker and Asian skin tones because they rely on heat. PICOSURE® PRO’s photomechanical energy approach delivers targeted treatment with significantly less thermal damage, making it the preferred choice for ethnic skin types. Marina Hu and our team have extensive experience safely treating diverse skin tones across Sydney’s Chatswood community.
For PIH and PIE (flat marks), 3–5 PICOSURE® PRO sessions typically produce significant clearance. For textural and indented scars, a combination program of 4–8 skin needling sessions and PICOSURE® PRO treatments is usually recommended, spaced 3–6 weeks apart. The MARA.H clinical team will provide a realistic treatment plan and timeline at your initial skin assessment.
For PICOSURE® PRO: minimal downtime, typically mild redness for 1–3 hours. For skin needling: mild redness and slight swelling for 24–48 hours. Both procedures allow you to resume normal activities within 24–48 hours. Your clinician will provide specific aftercare instructions including paramedical sunscreen and barrier repair products.
The degree of improvement depends on the type and severity of scarring. Superficial discolouration and mild textural scarring often respond very well to treatment, with significant visible improvement. Deeper ice-pick or boxcar scars can be substantially improved but may not be completely eliminated. During your consultation, your clinician will assess your scarring and set realistic expectations for your treatment plan.
Most clients begin to notice improvements in skin clarity and texture within the first few sessions. For active acne, many see a reduction in breakouts within two to four weeks of starting a DMK program. Scar revision is a longer process, with optimal results typically developing over three to six months of consistent treatment. Your clinician will outline a clear timeline during your consultation.
Both. At MARA.H, our acne revision programs are designed to address active acne and scarring simultaneously. We focus on controlling active breakouts first through DMK Enzyme Therapy and LED therapy, then progressively introduce scar-targeted treatments such as PICOSURE® PRO and skin needling once the skin is stabilised.
MARA.H is located at Level 2, 12 Thomas Street, Chatswood NSW 2067 — a 2-minute walk from Chatswood train station on Sydney’s North Shore. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (by appointment only). Every scar revision program begins with a skin assessment to classify your scar types and design the right combination protocol.
