Why Your Acne Won’t Clear:
The Real Reason — And the DMK Solution.

You have tried the products. You have tried the extractions. Your skin clears briefly, then breaks out again. The problem is not your routine. It is the fact that everything you have tried is treating the symptom, not the cause.

In 15 years of treating complex skin conditions, the most frustrating cases I see are not the most severe ones. They are the clients who have been managing acne for years — sometimes decades — cycling through products, trying prescription medications, getting regular facials, and still breaking out.

The frustration is not that nothing helped at all. It is that nothing helped lastingly. Clear for a few weeks, then back to square one.

When I see this pattern, I always ask the same question: has anyone treated the cause, or has everything been aimed at the symptoms? In nearly every case, the answer is the latter.

Quick Summary — Why Most Acne Treatments Fail
  1. Overactive sebaceous glands — DMK regulates oil production at the gland level, not just surface.
  2. A compromised skin barrier — DMK rebuilds the barrier rather than stripping it further.
  3. Chronic lymphatic congestion — the Plasmatic Effect flushes deep dermal waste.
  4. Cellular oxygen deprivation — reverse osmosis floods tissue with fresh oxygenated blood.
  5. P. acnes bacteria — DMK’s oxygenation kills anaerobic acne bacteria without antibiotics.

The Surface Problem with Most Acne Treatments

Most acne treatments — both over-the-counter and clinical — work at the surface. They dry out pimples with acids, extract congestion, kill bacteria topically, or suppress sebum production through medication. Some of these approaches help. None of them fix the underlying dysfunction that is causing the acne to keep forming.

That dysfunction is almost always a combination of the same factors:

  • Overactive sebaceous glands producing excess oil that blocks pores
  • A compromised skin barrier that cannot protect against bacterial invasion and environmental stress
  • Chronic lymphatic congestion — stagnant waste accumulating in the dermis that feeds the inflammation cycle
  • Cellular oxygen deprivation — cells that are not receiving adequate fresh blood and are essentially functioning in a toxic environment

You cannot fix any of these with a cleanser. You cannot fix them with an extraction facial. And you cannot fix them with a topical acid, however well-formulated.

These are internal dysfunctions. They require an internal solution.

What DMK Enzyme Therapy Actually Does

DMK Enzyme Therapy is a paramedical treatment developed by Danne Montague-King that works on a principle called reverse osmosis. Rather than applying actives to the surface of the skin, DMK uses transfer messenger enzymes that communicate with the skin’s own chemistry — stimulating the skin to heal itself, from within, using its own biological processes.

The treatment centers around a hard-setting enzyme mask that is left on the skin for 45 minutes. During this time, something measurable happens: the pressure created by the tightening mask forces a process called the Plasmatic Effect.

The Plasmatic Effect

“During treatment, you will feel your pulse beneath the mask — a strong pulsating sensation in your face and neck. This is not discomfort. This is evidence that fresh, oxygenated blood is flooding your capillaries, flushing out the stagnant lymphatic waste that has been feeding your breakouts. This is the mechanism that makes lasting acne revision possible.”

— Marina Hu, Founder MARA.H

When the mask is removed, the skin often shows a visible red network of capillaries — proof that the vascular response has occurred. This redness fades within 15-30 minutes, leaving skin that is visibly clearer, more oxygenated, and dramatically less congested.

Why DMK Breaks the Acne Cycle

The reason recurring acne responds so profoundly to DMK — in ways that other treatments do not achieve — is that it addresses all four of the root dysfunctions simultaneously.

01

Flushes Lymphatic Toxins

The Plasmatic Effect drives fresh blood through capillaries and lymphatic vessels, mechanically flushing out the accumulated waste and inflammatory byproducts that have been feeding the acne cycle at the dermal level.

02

Regulates Sebaceous Activity

The enzyme complex communicates directly with sebaceous glands to normalize their output — not suppress it artificially, but regulate it back toward healthy function. This is a fundamental difference from medications that simply shut down oil production.

03

Rebuilds the Skin Barrier

Most acne clients arrive with a compromised acid mantle — often made worse by previous use of harsh acids and prescription medications. DMK rebuilds the barrier proteins and restores the pH environment that makes skin naturally resistant to bacterial invasion.

04

Kills P. Acnes Bacteria

The oxygenation effect created by the Plasmatic Effect produces an environment that is hostile to the anaerobic bacteria responsible for inflamed acne — including P. acnes — without the side effects associated with antibiotic-based treatments.

What to Expect from a DMK Program at MARA.H

At MARA.H Chatswood, our DMK Enzyme Therapy programs are designed by me and validated by our Head Therapist Nancy Song, who is an officially certified DMK practitioner with 15 years of clinical experience. You can read more about our clinical team and their qualifications.

For most acne clients, we begin with a clinical deep cleansing facial to safely clear active congestion before commencing the structural rebuilding work of DMK. This is not always necessary — Nancy assesses your skin at the initial consultation and prescribes the sequence that is right for your specific condition.

Sessions are typically scheduled 1-2 weeks apart to align with the skin’s 28-day regeneration cycle. Most clients notice a meaningful reduction in active breakouts within 4-6 weeks. For complete acne revision — clearing active breakouts and beginning to address post-acne marks — a course of 6-12 sessions is usually recommended, followed by monthly maintenance.

Alongside in-clinic treatment, we prescribe DMK Home Prescriptives — a homecare protocol using DMK’s professional home products that continues the barrier rebuilding work between sessions. The in-clinic treatment and homecare work as a system. The homecare is not optional.

Who responds best to DMK for acne: Clients who have tried topical treatments and regular facials without lasting results. Clients with severe, cystic, or hormonal acne. Clients with acne combined with a compromised or reactive skin barrier. Clients who have been on long-term medications and whose barrier needs rebuilding. DMK is also highly effective for active acne followed by acne scar revision with PICOSURE® PRO once the breakout cycle is under control.

Before You Decide

Risks and Suitability

Results and responses vary

How your skin responds depends on the state your barrier is in when you start, what has been used on it before, hormonal factors, and how consistently the home prescriptives are followed. The enzyme masque sets firm over about forty-five minutes and pulls against the facial muscles, and how strong that pulsating sensation feels differs from one person to the next. Skin that is congested, or that has been over-treated in the past, can look more reactive before it looks better, and breakouts can surface during the early sessions as follicles clear. Conditions such as hormonal acne, rosacea and pigmentation are managed over a course and over time rather than resolved in one appointment, and they can return.

When this isn’t suitable, or needs assessment first

Enzyme therapy is not carried out over active skin infection, open or broken skin, or an acute flare of eczema or dermatitis in the treatment area. Tell the clinical team if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are taking isotretinoin or stopped it recently, have had recent laser, needling or peel treatment, have a history of keloid scarring, or get cold sores — some of these mean the protocol changes and some mean we wait. Because the masque sets firmly across the face and stays in place for an extended period, tell us beforehand if you have asthma, difficulty breathing through your nose, or find enclosed sensations distressing. A known allergy to any ingredient, including botanical and enzyme components, must be raised before the first treatment.

If something doesn’t seem right

Call the clinic on 0468 358 861. Redness that has not settled by the following day, swelling, itching or a rash spreading beyond the treated area, blistering, or skin that keeps getting worse rather than settling across a course should be looked at rather than waited out. If it is severe, if you have difficulty breathing, or you are worried, contact your GP or call 000.

Common Questions

DMK Enzyme Therapy is a paramedical skin revision treatment using transfer messenger enzymes to restore optimal skin function. For acne, it addresses root causes — flushing deep lymphatic toxins, regulating sebaceous gland activity, killing P. acnes bacteria, and rebuilding the compromised skin barrier. Unlike facials that cleanse the surface, DMK works at a cellular level through reverse osmosis.
Acne returns because most treatments address only the visible symptoms without treating the underlying dysfunction. Recurring acne is driven by overactive sebaceous glands, a compromised skin barrier, chronic inflammation, and stagnant lymphatic waste in the dermis. Topical products and extraction facials cannot reach or correct these deeper issues — which is why DMK produces lasting results where other approaches fail.
Yes. DMK is one of the most effective non-prescription treatments for severe and cystic acne. Unlike harsh medications that strip the barrier, DMK regulates oil production, kills acne bacteria, and flushes stagnant toxins without compromising the skin’s natural defences. At MARA.H Chatswood, Marina Hu designs DMK programs specifically for severe cases that have not responded to conventional treatments.
The Plasmatic Effect occurs when the hardening enzyme mask creates pressure that forces fresh, oxygenated blood to rush through capillaries in the face and neck. After the mask is removed, clients may see a visible red capillary network — evidence that fresh blood has flooded the tissue, flushing toxins and delivering oxygen. This redness is superficial and fades within 15-30 minutes.
Most clients begin to see significant reduction in active breakouts within 4-6 weeks. For complete acne revision, Marina Hu typically recommends 6-12 sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart, followed by monthly maintenance. The exact program is tailored at your initial skin assessment.
